Coach Marci's 7 Swim Safety Tips for Labor Day

Labor Day is almost here, children are back in school, and Summer is officially winding down. But as we head into the long weekend, water safety is as important as ever. Here are Coach Marci's top tips for staying safe when kids are playing in and around the pool this holiday weekend:

Child grabs pool wall
  1. If you have a young child who does not swim independently (without the use of floaties), get in the pool and stay next to them. There is no safe substitute for close supervision.

  2. Make sure your child knows how to get to and reach for the pool wall or steps on their own should they need to.

  3. Do not crowd the pool with toys and floats that make it difficult to see children in the water.

  4. Always name a designated "water watcher" any time children are in - or near - the water.

  5. If you're hosting a pool party, consider hiring a lifeguard if there will be children or alcohol present (we offer MarciSwim PartyGuards as one option).

  6. If you have pool of your own, make sure it has a proper fence and gate. Pool alarms can also be useful, but these are not substitutes for other safety measures. A designated adult should be present any time a child is near or in the water.

  7. Learn CPR and refresh yourself on the proper steps regularly.

With these 7 swim safety tips in mind, everyone can enjoy a fun and relaxing Labor Day weekend at the pool.
